More about us

What are zirconia dental implants?

For decades, conventional dental implants have used small titanium posts that act as the tooth root. While titanium is highly reliable and well-tolerated in the body, some people still prefer to have an alternative choice. If you are looking for a completely metal-free option due to personal preferences, holistic wellness goals, or metal sensitivities, zirconia implants could be the best option for you. They are made from high-strength ceramic material, and they mimic the natural colour of your tooth root, while also still offering the exceptional durability of titanium implants.

Key benefits of zirconia implants

Choosing zirconia comes with unique advantages for both your oral health and your confidence:

  • 100% metal-free: Perfect for patients with titanium allergies, metal hypersensitivity, or those who prefer entirely holistic, metal-free dental treatments.
  • Flawless aesthetics: Zirconia is naturally white, ensuring a bright, translucent, and completely lifelike result at the gumline.
  • Healthier gums: Zirconia has a smooth ceramic surface that naturally resists the buildup of plaque and bacteria. This drastically lowers the risk of gum inflammation around the implant site.
  • Incredible strength: Zirconia is known in materials science as “ceramic steel.” It is highly resistant to scratching, corrosion, and the daily pressures of biting and chewing.

What is the treatment process?

Restoring your smile with zirconia is a precise, carefully managed journey designed around your comfort:

Detailed evaluation & 3D imaging: We take precise 3D scans of your jawbone to map out the exact placement of your implant, ensuring maximum safety, stability, and alignment.

Implant placement: During a comfortable, routine procedure under local anaesthetic, the zirconia post is gently placed into the jawbone. We can provide temporary teeth, so you never have to walk away with a gap.

Natural fusing process: Your jawbone takes a few months to quietly bond with the ceramic zirconia structure. This creates a rock-solid, permanent foundation.

Placing your custom crown: Once fully healed, we anchor your permanent, custom-designed ceramic crown onto the implant. It will match the exact shape, shade, and contour of your surrounding natural teeth.

Zirconia dental implants vs titanium

While both options successfully restore missing teeth, comparing their structural differences helps you make the most informed decision for your mouth:

Many thanks to Geoff and his team for their unfailing kindness, professionalism and expertise over the last three years. I developed the utmost confidence that Geoff would overcome whatever problems my failing teeth presented. With my new set of implants I can now bite, chew, smile and talk forgetting all about my teeth for the first time in years. The old idiom of “The proof of the pudding is in the eating” comes to mind. Heartfelt thanks to Geoff for getting me to this stage.

I had implant placement surgery. Dr Gordon was professional and procedure was explained very clearly. I was very relaxed during my surgery. All staff at clinic are brilliant.

I had implants fitted yesterday without any problems. I started my treatment in March it took a while but all had to heal before the big day came I had no pain at any point. I would like to thank all at Portlethen Dental Clinic especially Geoff for giving me my smile back and for being a great Dentist. I would definitely recommend them for all treatment. It was an expensive procedure but well worth the money.

Travelled by Ferry and took the number 8 bus. Arrived early at the clinic and had the most thorough session with Dental hygienist prior to Dr Geoffrey carrying out two extractions and placing 3 implants. The procedure was for six teeth to be supported on 3 implant. It was a wonderful experience witnessing Dr Geoffrey lead his team into such well coordinated procedures involving bone augmentation if and where needed. While in the chair Dr Geoff at all times ensured a pain free experience. A removable temporary denture was moulded to ensure the smile until crowns to be fitted after approximately three months. I was given most clear ‘After Care’ instructions’ including medicines to be taken for a few days. We walked out and took the 8X bus back to union square and shopping before sailing home at 5pm. Many thanks to all the Staff. It is a very relaxing experience from Reception onwards and Dr Geoffrey very clearly answered any questions that I had. looking forward to next visit.

As a relatively new patient with Portlethen Dental Care, I would like to say how happy I am that I moved practice. This being due to my old dentist not being able to remove the root of a tooth badly infected by an abscess. I was very apprehensive about going to a new dentist (as I’m a bit of a coward) but that soon went away when I met Geoff. Straight away he was very reassuring & understanding but more importantly I felt confident in his ability, so much so that I decided to leave the practice I had been with for over 50 years. Since becoming a patient I’ve had a tooth implant & would wholeheartedly recommend a visit to speak to Geoff if this is something you are thinking of doing. His knowledge & skill in this field is fantastic. I’ve just recently had 6 veneers replaced & I’m beyond happy with my them. I can smile with the confidence that my teeth look so good. The best decision I’ve made this year.

Frequently asked questions

  • Yes, you can. At our practice near Aberdeen, your comfort, health, and confidence are at the heart of everything we do. We combine state-of-the-art dental technology with a warm, patient-first approach to make your implant journey as smooth and stress-free as possible. From your very first consultation to your final follow-up, our experienced clinicians are here to listen to your goals, answer your questions, and craft a bespoke treatment plan tailored exclusively to you.

  • Zirconia dental implants are modern, metal-free tooth replacements made from a high-strength, tooth-coloured ceramic material. Because they are naturally white, they blend in perfectly with your smile, making them an excellent choice for people with thin or recessed gums where traditional dark metal might show through. They are highly biocompatible, meaning your body accepts them incredibly well, and they fuse directly to your jawbone just like a natural tooth root.

  • The main difference comes down to the material and structure. Titanium implants are made of biocompatible metal and usually come in two pieces (the implant screw and a separate connector piece called an abutment). Zirconia implants are completely metal-free ceramics and are frequently crafted as a single, solid piece. While titanium has a long-standing track record, it is metallic grey in colour; zirconia offers a brighter, natural white look that is ideal for anyone looking to avoid metals entirely.

  • Neither is universally better, as both have fantastic success rates, but they serve different needs. Titanium is the time-tested industry standard, offering incredible flexibility for complex, full-mouth restorations due to its two-piece design. Zirconia is often the preferred choice for front teeth where appearance is critical, for patients with thin gum tissue, or for those who have metal sensitivities and prefer a holistic, metal-free alternative. We can help you decide which material fits your unique anatomy during your consultation.

  • Yes, zirconia implants are highly safe. They are made from a bio-inert ceramic, meaning they will not corrode over time, trigger chemical reactions, or leach into your bloodstream. They are also hypoallergenic, making them an ideal and safe solution for patients who have known sensitivities or allergies to metals like nickel or titanium. Furthermore, their smooth surface naturally resists plaque buildup, which helps keep your surrounding gums healthy.

  • Zirconia implants are designed to be a lifelong solution, often lasting 10 to 15 years or longer with proper care. Because they are a newer technology than titanium, long-term data past a couple of decades is still growing, but their structural strength is incredibly high. Just like natural teeth, their lifespan depends heavily on your oral hygiene; brushing, flossing, and attending regular dental appointments are the best ways to ensure they stay secure and functional for life.
