What are fixed braces?

Fixed braces are the traditional orthodontic treatment, and the type of appliance that lots of patients associate with straightening teeth. They are very reliable, effective and versatile, able to deliver precise movements and correct a range of issues such as misalignment or a problematic bite.

As the name suggests, fixed braces are securely stuck to your teeth for the duration of treatment. They are always working, using gentle forces to gradually straighten your smile, and there is no chance of them becoming lost while out of your mouth, as is the case with removable appliances. Fixed braces remain a popular choice due to their affordability and long lasting results.

Ceramic clear fixed braces

Ceramic brackets for discreet treatment

With many patients now looking for a more discreet teeth straightening solution, we are pleased to provide ceramic brackets as an alternative to the conventional metal. The tooth coloured brackets and wire have the same strength and durability as metal braces, and deliver the same results, but in a much more aesthetic way. You are able to achieve the straight smile you’ve always wanted with a subtle and comfortable solution.

What does the treatment process for fixed braces involve?

Book an appointment

We begin your fixed braces treatment with a consultation, ensuring you are suitable for this type of appliance. We examine your teeth and gums to check they are healthy and ready for treatment and take some photographs and scans with our digital equipment. Most importantly, we talk to you about your ideal results and what you can expect from your treatment.

At your fitting appointment, we securely fix the small and comfortable brackets to the front of your teeth. We thread the archwire through the brackets, accurately shaping it to achieve the optimum movements in your teeth.

During your fixed brace treatment, we see you in our practice for regular appointments. We check everything is going to plan and make adjustments to your archwire to keep your treatment on track.

Your treatment time will vary depending on the complexity of your case. When treatment is complete, we remove your fixed brace in a short appointment, revealing your new smile! We give you a retainer to keep your teeth in their new positions for the long term and leave you to enjoy smiling with pride.

Frequently asked questions

  • Fixed braces with metal brackets are visible in your mouth and will be able to be seen by other people. If you are interested in a more aesthetic option, ceramic brackets are much more discreet and blend into the natural shade of your teeth for a subtle look. Please talk to us about your options.

  • Retainers are seen as the final stage of all orthodontic treatment, and need to be worn to ensure long lasting results. Teeth have a habit of moving back to their original positions, eliminating all your hard work, so wearing a bespoke and comfortable retainer stops this from happening. We recommend you wear your retainer overnight for as long as you wish your teeth to stay straight.

  • No, fixed braces are secured to your teeth for the duration of your treatment and cannot be removed. This ensures they are constantly at work, gradually moving the positions of your teeth to create your dream results.

  • Fixed braces will not damage the enamel or structure of your teeth. We are highly trained and experienced in placing the brackets to ensure your teeth are not affected, and the dental adhesive can be easily removed from the surface of each tooth at the end of treatment. It is also important to clean your teeth and brace effectively during treatment to avoid any decay or discolouration.

  • Having fixed braces fitted to your teeth is not at all painful, as the brackets are stuck to the front surface of the tooth and the process does not need invasive treatment. You may find you experience some discomfort and soreness in the first few days after your brace is fitted, and each time it is adjusted, but this is temporary and can be managed with over the counter painkillers.

  • Yes, it is important to keep up with an excellent brushing and flossing routine at home during your fixed brace treatment. We are happy to give you some tips and advice, including using interdental brushes to reach the places between your brackets.
