If you’ve ever found yourself wishing for a brighter, more aligned smile, you aren’t alone. According to a Business Focus Magazine article, cosmetic dentistry has grown strongly across the UK and is now worth over £3 billion each year, as patients increasingly look for ways to boost their confidence and transform their oral aesthetics.
However, wanting to improve your smile is a big decision. At Portlethen Dental Care, we believe that achieving the smile of your dreams should always start with a consultation, a strong foundation of oral health, and tailored smile design. We will discuss what you need to know about dental veneers, how the process works, and why your natural dental health always comes first.

Healthy teeth first: The foundation of any great smile
Before we even begin talking about the cosmetic look of veneers, our number one priority is your oral health. Cosmetic treatment shouldn’t be built on an unhealthy foundation. Therefore, before we start the veneer process, our team will thoroughly check your teeth for decay, evaluate your gum health, and treat anything that needs attention first. Ensuring your teeth and gums are completely healthy safeguards your long-term comfort and protects your investment, guaranteeing that your new smile is as healthy as it is beautiful.

Designed for you: Natural-looking veneers tailored to your face
We don’t believe in the one-size-fits-all or overly bulky smiles. Modern porcelain veneers are ultra-thin shells of medical-grade ceramic designed to mimic the natural translucency of real enamel. Great cosmetic dentistry doesn’t look fake, and we create every smile meticulously to complement your unique facial features, lip line, and skin tone.

Preview before we make it: Digital Smile Design
One of the biggest worries patients usually ask us is ‘What will my teeth actually look like when they’re done?’ To take away the guesswork and to provide the full picture, we utilise Digital Smile Design. This advanced technology allows us to capture digital impressions of your mouth and map out a virtual preview of your new smile.
You are able to preview, review, and adjust your smile design before a single veneer is ever made. It’s a collaborative, reassuring process that ensures you are 100% in love with your proposed look before we move forward.

What is the treatment process?
Getting veneers typically takes a couple of carefully planned visits:
- Consultation & smile design: We listen to what you want to change, map your teeth using our digital workflow, and design your bespoke look. Once your underlying teeth are confirmed to be healthy, we finalise the plan.
- Preparation: A very minimal layer of enamel (often less than a millimetre) is gently prepared from the front surface of the tooth to ensure the veneer sits flush and natural.
- Crafting & fitting: While your custom veneers are being expertly crafted, temporary solutions may be fitted. Once ready, your permanent veneers are securely and comfortably bonded to your teeth.

How long do veneers last?
With proper care and good daily oral hygiene, porcelain veneers are a durable, long-term investment in your confidence. On average, high-quality porcelain veneers last for many years. Treating them just like your natural teeth, and brushing twice a day, flossing, wearing a nightguard if you grind your teeth, and attending regular dental check-ups, will keep them looking great for years to come.
